Beatriz Carlini, PhD, is a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Washington’s Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute (ADAI) and an Affiliate Associate Professor at the UW School of Public Health.
Her research career has been dedicated to understanding the public health impact of legal psychoactive substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and inhalants and, more recently, cannabis.
In addition to the course she’s developed for the Cannabis Institute, Dr. Carlini collaborated with an excellent team to develop an online course that educates health care providers on medicinal cannabis and chronic pain.
A native of Brazil, Dr. Carlini is a dual citizen and has been living in the Seattle area since 2000. She’s passionate about animal rights and has volunteered for the Seattle Area Feline Rescue for the past five years.

How do you present material to students?
My course has a conversational tone — I believe knowledge is always a work in progress and that to learn, we need to cultivate an open and inquisitive mind.
How you interact and work with students?
