TESOL Certificate Program in Seattle WA

This is the first course of the TESOL Certificate Program, the preferred certificate for those interested in teaching English overseas.

Being an English speaker does not by itself qualify one to be a teacher of English to speakers of other languages. In this introductory course, we will explore important factors that influence language teaching and learning and major theories and practices regarding the basic approaches, methods and strategies used in ESL/EFL.

We’ll discuss how these methods and approaches can be adapted to various age groups and proficiency levels. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply the knowledge gained in this class through discussions and demonstrating their own lessons incorporating the methods studied in this course.

The course will offer ample opportunities for hands-on learning activities and interactions with guest speakers in addition to working with your instructor and classmates. Additional classroom observation hours arranged outside of class.

Learning Outcomes

By the completion of this course, you will have:

  • developed an understanding of principles of effective communicative language teaching
  • developed an understanding of different learner factors and learning styles and implications for selection of teaching methods
  • reflected on and practiced the role of the teacher in the language classroom
  • developed and investigated strategies and activities for teaching in a four-skills ESL/EFL course
  • gained hands-on experience in different teaching methods to facilitate learners’ language skills
  • utilized opportunities to gain practical experiences and cultural awareness in language teaching through classroom observations and demonstrations
  • practiced preparing, presenting and critiquing lesson plans
  • examined factors involved in the selection of appropriate instructional materials
  • gained an awareness of the role that a TESOL certificate plays in employment in the field of teaching English to non-native speakers

  • Native Speakers of English who want to work internationally teaching English
  • International students who are studying in the U.S. and want to teach English overseas
  • Current tutors and teachers of English language learners at tutoring centers and nonprofit agencies

Prerequisites

  • BA/BS degree from English speaking country or permission of Director of Continuing Education.
  • Non-native speakers must score 92 on the TOEFL iBT or a 580 on the TOEFL pBT(paper-based)
