Get a glimpse into the wealth of art that has come out the Ashkenazi Jewish diaspora by watching and discussing a collection of Yiddish films from Eastern Europe and the United States.

Gain a broader understanding of the history and culture of Ashkenazi Jews over the last few centuries through the lens of cinema and theater.

Each session, enjoy watching a film that has particular cultural or historic importance, and gain new perspectives and meaning through discussion with the class.

This course is part of our Senior Series, designed for older students and offered during the daytime on diverse topics, though everyone of all ages is welcome and encouraged to enroll in these classes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will gain a broader understanding, familiarity and knowledge of:

  • history of Yiddish cinema and theater
  • history of Ashenazi Jews and Yiddish-speaking communities

history as a whole, and in Yiddish film in particular.
