Project Requirements and Procurement Management | Seattle Central College - Continuing EducationSuccessfully collecting and managing requirements has been recognized as a key success factor in many projects.

If requirements are not effectively captured, the probability of meeting customer and stakeholder expectations in a project is very low.

Learn the key concepts, methodologies and best practices of collecting and managing project requirements, including:

  • Procurement planning
  • Contract selection
  • Source selection
  • Procurement documents
  • Procurement execution and control

We'll also address key topics, such as:

  • The process for collecting and analyzing requirements
  • Defining scope through effective WBS practices
  • Procurement planning, execution, and contract control

Terminology, processes and definitions, where appropriate, follow the Project Management Institute’s (PMI®) Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide).

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, you will:

  • Understand typical challenges and obstacles of project success.
  • Know the differences and overlaps between the Project Manager and Business Analyst roles
  • Know the history of IIBA, the rise of Business Analysis and the BABOK
  • Know the importance of clear objectives, stable requirements and effective change control
  • Understand the definition of a requirement
  • Know how requirements differ from needs and features
  • Know the categories of requirements
  • Understand the requirements management process: elicitation, analysis & documentation
  • Know the importance of selling the solution to stakeholders and the role of a vision-scope document
  • Know the importance of linking solution requirements and features to specific WBS components
  • Know how to develop and execute a project procurement plan including contract selection, selection criteria, source selection and implementation
  • Understand the differences and appropriateness of contract types (cost reimbursable versus fixed price and procurement documents (IFB, RFP)
  • Implement effective contract change control

Who Should Take this Class?

Prerequisites: You should have attended at least a basic course in project management tools and techniques or have equivalent knowledge and experience, especially in the areas of schedule and cost control, risk management and managing project stakeholders. Experience with MS Windows and Office products. 2 or more years of experience in a project management environment is helpful, but not required

  • Students who are interested in continuing to build upon what they learned in Foundations of Project Management
  • Individuals interested in understanding how to collect and manage requirements in a project
